Reflection

Embrace the possibilities

I've been absolutely elated by your response to last week's material. I am happy that you're found the framework useful and I was excited to read the many ideas it seems to have generated.

I am inviting you to spend this week and next in the studio developing and implementing some of the ideas you have come up with. Once in the studio, if you observe that your hands take you in a somewhat different direction than you intended, go with the flow, as the making can surprise you. But always assess what is happening and do not compromise on second rate work simply to get the assignment done.

Be prepared to walk away

Some of our ideas are sometimes beyond our current reach. When this happens, I leave the unfinished experiments on my bench so that they can gestate and reassert themselves when the time is right. When you are confronted by what appears to be a block and you can't see any way forward, put it aside – on your gestation shelf -- and do other work. If, on the other hand, it feels you're almost there, keep going. Knowing the difference between these two feelings is important to being a Better Artist.

Assignment

In The Studio - 1

Take one of your challenges from last week and translate it into clay. Do not worry so much about finishing the piece as much as exploring the contour of your challenge. Focus on the technical aspect of the project, and observe where this takes you. Post images of your results in your e-studio or photo gallery.

Leave a comment in the Forums to let me know you have completed the assignment. Any feedback is welcome. To do this click the following link:
